Living in Oud-West: What to Expect
Oud-West was built in the 1880s and 1890s as Amsterdam pushed west beyond the Singelgracht — the same era and brickwork as De Pijp, but with wider streets and the Vondelpark instead of a market as its anchor. Its centrepiece today is De Hallen, the monumental 1902 tram depot on the Bellamyplein that now houses the Foodhallen's twenty-odd food stalls, an arthouse cinema, a public library and a hotel.
The daily texture is what sells it. The Ten Katemarkt runs six days a week directly outside De Hallen — cheaper and more local than the Albert Cuyp — while the Kinkerstraat and Bilderdijkstraat handle everything from Turkish bakeries to specialty coffee. Evenings are quieter than De Pijp's; this is a neighbourhood of young families and professionals who cycle to work, and it empties into the Vondelpark at the first sign of sun.

Getting Around
Commuting from Oud-West
Oud-West runs on trams and bikes. Tram 17 along the Kinkerstraat reaches Centraal in about a quarter of an hour, tram 1 on the Overtoom covers the Leidseplein and the museums, and Station Lelylaan — one tram stop west — puts Schiphol eight minutes away by direct train.
