At City Retreat, it means every apartment is inspected by our team before each new tenancy, stocked with everything you need to live — not just sleep — and handed over in person so you know where everything is and nothing is left to chance.
Moving to Amsterdam is already a logistical challenge. Finding a GP, registering your address, opening a bank account, starting a new role — there's enough to deal with in the first weeks without spending evenings assembling flat-pack furniture or waiting for a boiler engineer to show up. What Happens Before You Move In
Every new tenancy triggers a preparation process. Here's what our team does before your keys are handed over.
Property Inspection
Our team visits the apartment to check every room, every appliance, and every piece of furniture. Anything not up to standard is repaired or replaced before your arrival date.
Professional Deep Clean
A full professional clean of the entire apartment — including kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, floors and all surfaces. The apartment is cleaned to the same standard regardless of who moved out before you.
Linen and Towels Prepared
Fresh bed linen, duvet covers, pillowcases and towels are prepared for each occupant. You'll find the beds made and towels laid out on arrival.
Utilities Confirmed Active
Gas, electricity, water and Wi-Fi are all confirmed as active before you arrive. Utilities are in City Retreat's name — you never need to contact a Dutch energy provider.
In-Person Handover
We meet you at the apartment for a full walk-through — keys, how everything works, where things are, and neighbourhood tips. You leave the handover knowing the apartment properly, not just that it exists.
Support Throughout Your Tenancy
Ready to live doesn't end at move-in. Our Amsterdam-based team handles maintenance, queries and any issues throughout your tenancy.
Weekly Cleaning
A professional clean is included every week throughout your stay, with fresh linen rotated on a regular schedule.
Maintenance Support
Log any issue with our team and a local contractor is typically on-site within two working days. We hold the keys — no chasing landlords or waiting for access to be arranged.

Do I need to bring anything?
Just your suitcase and personal belongings. Everything else — furniture, kitchen equipment, linen, towels, cleaning supplies — is already in the apartment. Utilities and Wi-Fi are active from day one.
Are the photos on the listings accurate?
Yes. City Retreat visits and photographs every apartment before listing it. We only use current photos of the actual unit — not stock images or photos from a different floor. What you see is what you get.
How does the weekly cleaning work?
A professional cleaner visits once a week during your tenancy. Linen is rotated on a regular schedule. If you'd like to adjust the cleaning day or frequency, speak to our team — we'll do our best to accommodate.
What if something breaks or needs maintenance?
Contact our team by email or phone and we'll arrange for a local contractor to visit, typically within two working days. Because City Retreat holds the keys to every apartment we manage, access is never a problem. You don't need to be present — we'll coordinate directly and update you when it's resolved.
Do I need to set up Dutch utility accounts?
No. Gas, electricity, water and Wi-Fi are all in City Retreat's name and included in your monthly rate. You never need to contact a Dutch energy provider, set up direct debits, or deal with an end-of-year reconciliation bill. The monthly figure you agree is the figure you pay — every month.
